Prepare for both. CAT opens the IIMs and many top B-schools across India. MAH-CET opens Maharashtra’s state MBA/MMS seats. They share most of the syllabus. Treat CAT as the main exam and MAH-CET as the speed-practice sibling.
Start with where you want to study
Pick the colleges first, then check which exams they accept. A student who wants a Mumbai or Pune college and is happy to stay in Maharashtra needs MAH-CET. A student who wants an IIM or another national B-school needs CAT. A student who wants options needs both.

What the table means for you
- CAT rewards judgment. With negative marking and fewer questions, choosing what to skip matters as much as what you solve.
- MAH-CET rewards speed. At 200 questions in 150 minutes you have under a minute per question. Daily timed practice matters more than new tricks.
- The overlap is large. Quant, reading comprehension and reasoning serve both. MAH-CET adds abstract reasoning, so give it a few weeks of its own.
Our advice
If you are in the Navi Mumbai belt, Kharghar, Nerul, Belapur or Panvel, you are within reach of Maharashtra colleges. That makes MAH-CET worth the extra weeks, even if CAT is your main goal. A good CAT plan with a short MAH-CET block usually costs a few weeks. Skipping MAH-CET can cost you the state seat route.
Skip MAH-CET if you will only apply outside Maharashtra. Skip CAT if you are certain you want only Maharashtra colleges that accept MAH-CET. Be sure before you drop either. We have not tracked how many of our students sit both, so we do not quote a number.
